Submitted by Ted Smith, Coeur d’Alene Audubon Chapter President

Last evening , 11/25/24, Coeur d'Alene Audubon partnered with the Bureau of Land Management and the Coeur d'Alene Public Library to present a program entitled "The Eagles of Winter". Wildlife Biologist Carrie Hugo and Coeur d'Alene Audubon President Ted Smith spoke to 115 attendees about the biology, ecology and life history of America's national emblem, the bald eagle. Topics covered included physical descriptions of bald eagles and golden eagles for comparison, how to tell juvenile bald eagles from golden eagles and the courting and nesting and fledging timing of bald eagles. Carrie covered the annual arrival of bald eagles on Lake Coeur d'Alene. She explained why they come here, when they get here and how long they stay. She also shared the BLM's eagle count program and its more than 48 year history. Also available for guests to examine were taxidermy mounts of an adult and a juvenile bald eagle, a golden eagle, and an osprey, all courtesy of the Idaho Department of Fish and Game.
