Injured Birds

Many of our community members reach out to us in the spring and summer with questions about injured and orphaned birds. At the current time, Coeur d’Alene only has a raptor rescue, leaving us to navigate a solution for all other types of birds. Our recommendation remains steady when you find an orphaned, injured or sick bird, other than a raptor:

Do your best to protect the bird from cats and children and leave it be. When baby birds fledge, their parents feed them wherever they end up. Mom and dad are probably watching and will be very cautious. Juvenile robins are often mistaken for injured, but it is common for robins to pre-fledge and be cared for on the ground by their parents.

We have included some links that we hope you will find helpful should you decide to take further action:

Creating a habitat for birds in your garden is a great way to provide additional protection and safety:

  • Leave snags or supply nurse logs.

  • Provide beneficial insect nesting habitat, such as bundles of stems and branches, rock piles and areas of bare dirt.
